Abstract – Timber produced from plantation forests and community forests are mainly fast growing species. In general, planting system in industrial plantation forests or community forests in Indonesia has been converted into polyculture system, hence the species are vary but available in a limited number of each species. The efficiency enhancement of natural resources utilization needs to be performed to overcome this issue by mixing wood species as raw materials of composite board. The objectives of this study were to determine the effect of cold water immersion and particle combination on the physical and mechanical properties of particleboard. Three fast growing species used were Maesopsis eminii, Paraserianthes falcataria and Acacia mangium. Some raw materials were pretreated by immersed in cold water for 24 hours before board manufacturing. Sixteen (16) combination of particleboard were produced. Methylene diisocyanate (MDI) was used as a binder with 10% resin content. The physical and mechanical properties of the particleboard were evaluated based on JIS A 5908:2003 standard and the results were compared to the same standard. Regarding physical properties, the average values of density ranged between 0.52-0.65 g/cm3, moisture content ranged between 7.06%-9.24%, water absorption for 2 h and 24 h ranged between 5.94%-19.82% and 19.76%-67.17% respectively, and thickness swelling for 2 h and 24 h ranged between 4.83%-9.74% and 10.36%-18.32% respectively. Regarding mechanical properties, the average values of modulus of elasticity ranged between 8340-17,242 kgf/cm2, modulus of rupture ranged between 97.59-196.89 kgf/cm2, internal bond ranged between 2.83-10.53 kgf/cm2, and screw holding power ranged between 78.47-114.98 kgf. The board parameters which met JIS A 5908: 2003 standard are density, moisture content, thickness swelling for 2 h, modulus of rupture, internal bond and screw holding power. Homogeneous board made from Acacia mangium pretreated with cold water immersion yielded superior properties.
